Design is personal

Despite the self-congratulatory TEDness of the venue, I found myself about 50% happier after watching Stefan Sagmeister’s 2004 talk “Yes, Design Can Make You Happy”:

I found this from the Signal vs. Noise post, so by now most of the rest of the world is hip to it as well. My main praises are not for the design choices he holds as examples, though there are some nice finds in there. What I truly connected with is the way he presents his approach in such an intensely personal fashion, and most importantly how his design philosophy derives from the close observations he makes about himself and his own life.

Transformers Movie 1986

The original Transformers movie is on YouTube in nine segments. I watched some of it last night, and the rest this morning. I’d forgotten how great those Unicron scenes are, with the eerie spacey electronica and the Orson Welles voice. Here is the first to get you started.

I remember being so excited to see this as a kid. My dad brought me, which in retrospect I realize was so good natured of him. Thanks dad, I know this isn’t something you would have watched on your own. I left the theater totally traumatized and saddened after seeing most of my favorite characters die. It was a rough movie that way. I don’t see how the new Spielberg version coming out this summer can even compare.
